Well today is Saturday and we’ve been here for about a week and so far, the only furniture I have is a Coffee table, a bed…. oh wait. That’s it!
So today my mother and her husband are coming over to bring me their sofa (Hoorah!) and a table from my brother Chris. The table is too big for our kitchen but it will serve nicely as a desk for Tristan’s laboratory office.
After all of that hussle and bustle I am heading over to my Mom’s storage unit so that I may poke around in there for anything I need. I need a lot, and I’m sure my mother doesn’t have it but it’s a start. My brother is giving me a 4 drawer unit thingy that is sponge painted pink and white. I told Tristan he gets to have it. Just kidding, I bought spray paint and it will be my weekend warrior challenge to fix up that unit so I can have a bedside table.
I unpacked all of the boxes and realized… I don’t have anything. I guess that’s what happens when you move across the country with only the items that will fit in your 2007 Toyota Corolla!
So here is my needs list:
- Floor Lamps
- TV Stands
- End Tables for Living Room
- Bedside Tables
- Office Desk
- Filing Cabinet
- Living room chair of some sort (not that our fold up camping chairs aren’t cute)
- DVD Rack
- Bookshelves
I guess that’s all I need. Not too bad right? Just one question, since when was Target, K-Mart, Wal-Mart and the like all so DAMN expensive for furniture?! I thought that was the cheap place to go! $80 for a floor lamp! $120 for a bookshelf! They aren’t even nice bookshelves either! It’s a good thing I live so close to the Salvation Army thrift store otherwise we’d have NO FURNITURE HOPES AT ALL!
So that’s my scoop for today. Stay Tuned.
Also, I keep mace above my Air Conditioner so if any of you weirdos think of stalking me based on my last entries apartment number… You’ll be sorry.
Cheerio!

Have you looked on Craig’s List for free stuff? If you watch any of those shows on HGTV they actually MAKE YOU want to refinish crappy stuff you can get free online or along the side of the road. They always make it look so beautiful afterwards, and I always think “Hey! I’d pay money for that thing …”
I’m totally hip to having to give up everything to move cross country. I could only keep what would fit in a small trailer, and now I’m always looking for stuff I no longer own. Joan had to do the same thing, she had to get rid of everything that wouldn’t fit into her bedroom. They say that purging yourself of material objects makes you feel better, but I’m not so sure about that.
What have you got for cooking/baking supplies? I’ve some extras…what do you need?
@ Wendy – I’ve got a site even better than craigslist – try FREECYCLE. It’s a group on yahoo and everything on it is free. Are you getting rid of something? Freecycle! Are you looking for something? FREECYCLE! They have a different group for each city and i’ve already checked and they do have one in El Paso! Check it out – it’s amazing. I’m a big fan of Craigslist too, I’m about to post a dining room table on there (we have no room!) HGTV is my heart and soul. I watch it all day long if I have the chance, I love their projects. I also read all the Better Homes & Garden magazines so they all have the refinishing projects. Oh joy, I love it.
As far as getting rid of everything, it felt great! Until we got here and realized we had nothing LOL then we had to buy everything and that sucked.
I have next nothing for cooking and baking supplies which really sucks because I love to bake. I can’t cook for shit but baking is great! I have a small 6 cup muffin pan and a set of mixing bowls and thats it. Ha-ha! If you want to send anything by all means! I need your address so I can send you the things I’ve been collecting for you!
I’m emailing you. I need your new mailing address.
